Well before Apple’s iPad was unveiled in early 2010 the internet was booming with predictions of tablet devices becoming the second coming for magazines and traditional print publications. Now that the iPad is 2 months and 2 million units sold post-launch that promise is being kept by way of Conde Nast and their new Wired Magazine app. Having been a Wired subscriber for years myself I can say that it’s amazing. Sometime while swiping pages, interacting with articles and watching supplimentary videos I was hooked. Having experienced the ‘future of print media’ I’m more than ready to welcome back an old industry friend, the adult magazine.
Yes, the same magazine that was once found rolled up behind convenient stores or at the bottom of a sock drawer is poised to go digital in a big way. And why not? Adult magazines are part of the sinking print media after all and the timing couldn’t be better. In the coming months we will see a flood of tablet magazines largely due to the ease of creation and development time thanks in part to the newly announced “digital viewer software” from adobe . Pair that with the openness and extended device growth found with Google’s Android Marketplace, stellar tablet adoption and you have the foundation for a digital adult magazine rack.
